Coordinating Unit for Language Teaching

Coordinating Unit for Language Teaching (CULT) mainly deals with the first year language classes where the new students acquire primary and secondary languages required by their departments. Most departments would like their students to be skilled in two languages out of the three that the centre offers: English, Turkish, and Arabic.

In Engineering, Economic & Administrational Sciences, and Law faculties, the primary language is English and the secondary language is Turkish whereas the primary language is Turkish for the Turkish Language and Literature, and Arabic for the Arabic Language and Literature Departments. Azerbaijani Language and Literature Students study Azerbaijani as their primary language.

The students are given a proficiency test before the lessons start to determine their level. The ones who are found sufficient in the test pass to the first year directly and the rest are divided into level groups for better instruction.

CULT aims at forming small student groups to increase educational efficiency. Modern teaching methods are used to help the students acquire the languages and improve their language skills more effectively.

English Language

Qafqaz University has chosen English as the instruction language as it is mainly the language of communication and science in the world. English is now the medium at all the departments that welcome international students.

English is basically taught in the first year at Qafqaz. At the beginning of the year, the students who can prove that they have sufficient knowledge of English pass to the first year directly. To qualify the students should either produce an official TOEFL score of at least 500, or an official IELTS score over 6, or get 60% from the proficiency test given before the lessons start.

The language is taught through Course-book, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Grammar, and Terminology lessons. Continuous assessment is the key point in evaluating the students’ success and the Testing Office plays the key role in this. Various criteria are used to determine the success, such as class tests, midterms, and lecturer’s assessment. Attendance is very important and we expect our students to be good attendees.

Turkish Language

Since the university is of Turkish origin, and both countries use a close dialect, Turkish Language has played an important role in the educational process. At the university, a great deal of the faculty is from Turkey.

There are many links now between Azerbaijan and Turkey in the fields of education, military, business, state affairs, and economy. Therefore, Turkish Language has been used as a medium in teaching and means for the graduates to find jobs easily in both countries. Some of the graduates go to Turkey to continue their education, as well.

Turkish lessons are offered under the subtitles of Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Speaking, and Coursebook. Turkish Language and Literature students are also offered Calligraphy and Azerbaijani Language lessons to have an understanding of the old script and the present language.

Arabic Language

(only for Arabic Language and Literature students)

Arabic Language, considered by many as one of the mysterious and rich languages of the East, is one of the keys of the great oriental culture. Many literary masterpieces written in this language are still attractive in the contemporary period. 13th century is a period when Azerbaijani and Arabic literary ties reached its peak. Many Azerbaijani writers even wrote some of their work in Arabic.

There are many Arabic words in Azerbaijani Language and they have an important role in analyzing Azerbaijani Language and classic literature.

The course is consisted of Grammar, Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Calligraphy along with basic English, Turkish and Azerbaijani Language lessons.
